Summer 2015 – HCT After Dark Presents:
Meet the Director
Chris Alderete is thrilled to be directing Next to Normal for HCT After Dark. Chris has lived on Kauai since he was five years old, and he could not be more excited to make his directorial debut with Hawaii Children’s Theatre. He received his BFA in Musical Theatre from The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, and over the past 10 years he has performed Off-Broadway in NYC, Los Angeles, and in regional and local productions. He is so excited to share all he has learned over the past years with our amazing theatre community.
About the Program
HCT After Dark was started in 2010 to give actors who have graduated from the Hawaii Children’s Theatre Summer Stars program an opportunity to continue performing in Broadway-quality live theatre during the summer on Kauai. The first play, RENT, was wildly successful and since then HCT After Dark has produced The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Les Miserables, and Avenue Q.

Note from the authors : “The authors of Next To Normal feel strongly that the profanity in the play is necessary to portray these particular characters fully and honestly, to give a real sense of the depths of their feelings and the stakes involved in their interactions, and to paint a realistic picture of how people under pressure speak.”
Next To Normal deals with the serious topic of mental illness and the steps one family goes through to find “normal.” Some of the topics that are addressed in the play include bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, mania, delusions and hallucinations, and electroconvulsive therapy.
